Ruthie rang the doorbell to her mother’s apartment. It had been several months since the 2 had seen each other in person. When her mother opened the door, they quickly embraced and headed for the kitchen. As they sat at the table, drinking coffee and catching up on old news, Ruthie phone vibrated. She pulled it out to check, but it was nothing important. Instead of putting it back in her pocket, she set it on the kitchen table. From that point on, she was unable to focus on the conversation. At one point, she got so focused on her phone that her mother had to text her, asking if she was going to talk to her or the phone. Caught off guard and embarrassed by her mother’s move, Ruthie put her phone away and spent the next hour giving her mother exactly what she needed in that moment—her full attention.
