Growing up as a middle child, I found it a little harder to fit in. I didn’t feel equal. I felt different. I wasn’t the firstborn, nor the baby of the household, so I pretty much screamed for any attention I received. Unfortunately, the only time I managed to get attention was when I got myself into trouble. In school, I tried fitting in, only to be called names because my clothes were different. I’ve been called strange, weird, and different my whole life. Today, I am not the same as I was back then. I am still different… stronger, wiser, more confident, and yet now I’m finally proud of it..

We live in a society where we are all taught to go with the flow. We spend a lot of our energy chasing trends and doing whatever it takes to keep up with the Joneses, and in doing so, what we are really doing is slowly losing our own identity.

Well, listen up, people—when you are busy swimming alongside everyone else, you make it harder for others to see just how unique you really are. Try swimming in a direction that will actually provide you with enough space for others to see your beauty. It may take a little more effort to swim upstream, but it’s easier for others to witness your greatness when you rise above the surface.

So the next time you feel pressured to follow the crowd, remember that your true power lies in standing out and being unapologetically you.
